Hi seevic, We are about to release a new firmware with further improved buffer control and frequency tracking, which should improve the playback even with ESS chips with fairly low DPLL settings. The DAC204 might need a firmware update which I believe Weiss will be happy to do. Please let them know and ask what the best approach would be. They know our products and managed to update their DACs bby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Drew769, Thanks for the post. It is hard to tell, where the issue with downmix might be. Could you please share more details how the VanityPRO is configured and what firmware version it is running? Also, can you confirm the player is configured to output full 5.1 or 7.1 channels and you get correct number of channels shown in the home screen on the VanityPRO? I have just checked the mixing raby AP - VanityPRO
Hi seevic, I know it has been a while and I appreciate everyone's patience. Please see the update on our Facebook. Long story short, the USB modules should be with JVB next week in full distribution. Best Regards, Pavelby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Bob, No changes to functions and features. Actually there are some minor improvements to the frequency tracking and buffer management which will be later included in a new official fw release. Safe travelling! Best Regards, Pavelby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Bob, That is useful to know, thanks. I guess the options available in the AppleTV (or their lack) are optimized for mainstream equipment and mainstream user and we have to work with what we have Best Regards, Pavelby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Bob, Thanks for offering your assistance to remotely debug the dropouts you are experiencing. I would suggest to start with logging a diagnostic serial dream from the unit via USB. For this you would need a diagnostic firmware (which has the serial stream enabled) and a serial terminal which can dump the stream into a file. The firmware can be found here: FW_BUF3_UART. And brief instructioby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Bob, Thanks for the additional info. The XLRs are correct output impedance and so are the coax outputs on other modules. If you are getting those dropouts on two different DACs and you think it is not buffer adjustment related, it sounds like there is something else going on. There are a few things we can try, but first would you be happy to record and send us back some diagnostic data from tby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Bob, Do I understand correctly that you imply AppleTV has Atmos decoder and if LPCM output is required it can decode Atmos and downmix to desired speaker configuration, provided the downmix details (coordinates) are provided? One cannot really tell from the specifications. Even if Atmos is "supported" it does not necessarily mean that it can be decoded and rendered into LPCM. Same fby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Bob, Thanks for the update. How is your power distribution consistency? My friend used to live in a block of flats and he was getting dropouts due to unlocks of DAC digital input every time someone called elevator in the building. So he only listened to music late in the night when chances of someone needing an elevator was low. Power distribution and cabling can sometimes amplify the effecby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Bob, You are right, the is no way we can cover all possible scenarios and please everyone. The EDID editor is in the VanityPRO for two reasons. One is to set the correct audio capabilities depending on the installed output module, and second to give the user some options of the default video EDID in case there is nothing plugged into the HDMI TX port. Sometimes when people use simple signalby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Bob, A stupid question, you did turn the word clock output on in the menu of the VanityPRO, didn't you? Can you please paste here or PM me the input specifications of the word clock signal from the Grace manual? Thanks, Pavelby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Drew, Welcome! It is great to hear that you are enjoying the VanityPRO. Your question about the power supply is quite relevant. To take full advantage of the dual power input and the dielectric barrier one should use decent quality and ideally isolated power supplies. You are more than welcome to experiment with various options, or you can (very soon!) grab our linear power supply designed sby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Bob, Yes, you would need to be able to relate the dropouts to what's happening on the screen. I had a brief look at your monitor controller and noticed that there is a wordclock IO. If it is not used yet, you could try to connect the VanityPRO word clock output to the GraceM908 word clock input and synchronize both devices. Hi Bob, May I ask what your DACs or active speakers are that you feed with the VanityPRO? It is a known phenomenon that ESS based DACs may produce some unwanted pops and dropouts if they have the DPLL set too aggressively. As you say, it is to do with jitter reduction, but on the DAC side. It is virtually impossible for the buffer in the VanityPRO to under or overrun due to the way the control aby AP - VanityPRO
Karl W. Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Or > does converting back to HDMI recreate the problem > that you have fixed? Hi Karl, you are right, the problem is largely inherent to the HDMI protocol and it's implementation and there isn't much that can bo done about it. I have pointed that out in the HDMI jitter article HERE, where I questioby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Bob, Correct, the VanityPRO follows the channel assignment as per the CTA standard above, which seems to be fairly common. I am glad the SMPTE has the same mapping :-) Let's see what happens when we have to go beyond 8 channels with Atmos or some other spatial format, it makes me a bit nervous to be honest :-) Regards, Pavelby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Bob, thanks for your comprehensive report. You are right in your observation that with a HDMI sink connected to the HDMI output port of the VanityPRO the EDID reported back to the source is a combination of the audio capabilities of the VanityPRO and video capabilities of the sink. Although it is functionally logical, it is not explicitly mentioned in the manual. Also, the video settings in tby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Bob, Thanks for the update. I am glad to hear that you managed to get rid of the dropouts. Having a HDMI device plugged into the HDMI output of the VanityPRO would cause the video EDID from this device being combined with the audio EDID of the VanityPRO. I appreciate this may cause some conflicts in case of more complex HDMI chains with many devices. At least you have nailed it and I am happyby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Bob, What an adventure! I am glad to hear that you eventually managed to get the unit updated. It is quite interesting you started getting HDMI input dropouts. Did they start suddenly out of blue or could you relate them to some change in the HDMI setup? I guess it could be EDID or HDMI link re-init if there is an intermittent HDMI device before or after the VanityPRO. Or does it happen onlyby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Onalp, The short answer is no, we haven't tested anything beyond 4k2k 60Hz. From the specifications perspective I believe The VanityPRO won't work with FRL or anything beyond 4k, simply because it is "only" HDMI2.0b compliant. Although the HDMI subsystem is software upgradeable, FRL support requires changes in hardware due to different signaling schemes. Best Regards, Pby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Jimrod, That is great news! I am glad you managed to get it working with Milan's assistance. The Visual C++ libraries may be sometimes non-trivial to manage. Anyway, thanks for the positive feedback! Best Regards, Pavelby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Jimrod, Sorry to hear about your troubles updating the VanityPRO. I believe my colleague Milan is talking to you via PM to help you with the issue. Once resolved, we will share the conclusion here. As a general observation, if the HDMI update process has not finished successfully, you should be able to load the previous version of the firmware 5.1 from the firmware archive you can find onby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Karl W, This option has been added primarily for scenarios, when the HDMI source (streamer, BD player) has no explicit option to set the output audio format to LPCM and bitstream is either higher priority format or the only format available and the user got a loud noise coming from the VanityPRO instead of LPCM audio. I believe there are not many products such as cinema processors/decoder inby AP - VanityPRO
Hi misig1, I appreciate it may feel weird, but I bet the OKTO would do a better job than the DAC built into the speakers. Although the speakers are "digital", the class-D amps still amplifies analogue signal, which needs to be converted from digital to analogue form by a built-in DAC. It would actually make a nice nice listening test exercise, if it sounds better with digital feed fromby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Fred-ql, Now with the boards in production I would not hesitate to give an ETA for the boards to be on the shelf with our distributors. We should have the boards back in 2-3 weeks and if everything goes well (it rarely does though) we might be able to ship before we break for Christmas holidays. Alternatively, it should happen early January shortly after we wake up from the New Year celebratiby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Misig1, Thanks for the additional details about your system. I see what you are trying to achieve. I am afraid the USB module won't work the way you want. You basically require a multichannel USB audio interface and mux the digital outputs to your Genelecs. The only alternative I can see is to feed the Genelecs with analogue signal from the OKTO and hook the VanityPRO into the digital inby AP - VanityPRO
Hi Misig1, Thank you for your interesting questions. Let me ask a different one :-) Cannot you use a HDMI output from your Mac/PC to send HDMI to the VanityPRO via HDMI mux? It would be probably easier than having multiple different sources to the VanityPRO (HDMI and US and the VanityPRO basically substituting a multichannel USB soundcard. Right now the USB output module has one output for monby AP - VanityPRO
