Hi Pavel, Wow, thank you so much for looking into this issue for me! Let me know if there might be any scenarios or experiments I can run on my end that might help you diagnose the issue. Graz!by Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
For sure, thank you, Pavel. While on the subject of settings, is it best to have the Coaxial Output in the Audio Format Setup set to Bitstream or to LPCM, or does it not matter? Does one have less processing than the other? Thanks again.by Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
I recently acquired an Oppo with the DoP Vanity model installed and also picked up a streamer (EverSolo DMP-A6) with a DAC onboard that accepts DoP via coax and plays DSD. Sure enough when I play the Vanity in DoP mode, the A6 displays DSD 64 and sounds very nice for a spell until a blast of white noise/loud static overwhelms the music for a few seconds before it disappears as suddenly as it cby Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
Thank you for the response, Pavel. It wasn't exactly what you suspected, but your suggestions led me back to going through all the settings to see if adjusting anything addressed the issue and... eureka! In case this happens to anyone else, here's what I found: In Setup Menu --Audio Processing --DTS Neo:6 Mode ---> this needs to be OFF Unbeknowby Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
Hi Pavel & others, I recently acquitted a DAC/streamer that displays the sampling rate of the incoming coaxial stream from the Vanity103HD output, and although SACDs read PCM 176, I cannot get Blu-rays or DVDs to register higher than 48kbs even though the video display shows the Oppo is reading them at 192kbs. Has anyone else discovered this phenomenon? Is there a setting I am perhapsby Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
Hi Pavel and others. I was wondering if installing a quality linear power supply to a 103 w/Vanity helps the SQ as much as it does with a standard 103, or if using a Vanity board would make those improvements somewhat negligible? Same question for an improved master clock in the 103 itself. Would the reclocking inside the Vanity board make an improved master clock for the 103 redundant or oby Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
Oh, so the audio data is reclocked by the Vanity board for I2S output, as well as for the spdif output. That was what I was inelegantly trying to ask. Thanks. The implementation of I2S on the vanity203 board should be substantially better than if I installed one of these into the 103 I currently use with a Vanity103 board: Michaelby Mjay71 - Vanity203HD (discontinued)
Thank you, Pavel, that makes sense. Does the I2S draw its clock data straight from the oppo master clock, or does the board clean up the clock signal somehow beforehand? Considering the reclocking of the signal for spdif output of the vanity board, it would be interesting to see/hear what improvements timing/jitter control are achieved via I2S.by Mjay71 - Vanity203HD (discontinued)
Thanks, Pavel. I use the Vanity103 board and was curious what advantages are gained with the 203 plus vanity board. Regarding the I2S, I thought I had read the Oppo 203 can handle audio samples greater than 24/192 through maybe usb or hdmi inputs, and was wondering if those higher rates, possibly even DSD 128, can be passsd on as is through the I2S link. If that is not the case, are the advaby Mjay71 - Vanity203HD (discontinued)
Hi, Pavel. What are the resolution limits over I2S with the Oppo203/Vanity combo for PCM and DSD? Thanks!by Mjay71 - Vanity203HD (discontinued)
I hear what you’re saying. I’m referring to releases where compression is overly applied to the final mix, but the multi-channel tracks retain their full dynamic range (or close to it). I noticed this with the remixed Sgt Pepper blu-ray issue, among others, for example. In these cases, I sometimes get a better result over the compressed stereo mix by downmixing the uncompressed tracks to two chaby Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
Thank you for the graphs, Pavel. I’m hearing the best sound using the filter with the 25kHz corner frequency (slow at 88.2). If what I’ve read is correct, DSD 64 has large HF noise beginning somewhere between 24-30khz, so the 25kHz filter would also objectively make the most sense, as it appears to be the closest to allowing the widest bandwidth of music while still filtering out all if not aby Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
Thanks, Pavel. Oddly, I often prefer the down mixed multi over the stereo mix, which is sometimes much more dynamically compressed, congested, and "loud" compared to the surround. For SACD's, the vanity hd gives me yet another downmix option to play with.by Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
I know about the downmix option to 4.0, but I'm wondering what is the best way to downmix multichannel to 2-channel stereo? Is it simply to choose that option on the Oppo, or is there a clever way to allow the vanity module to do the down mixing?by Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
Another graph bump, but in the meantime, I'm interested in hearing user preferences between the sharp and the slow rolloff.by Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
Thank you, Pavel. Looking forward to it.by Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
Hey, Pavel. Have you had a chance to dig up graphs comparing the filter responses?by Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
I have the SPdif Downmix version. I listen 2-channel and currently use it for DSD-PCM conversion of SACD, as well as sending native res PCM Blu-ray, DVD-A, and CD to the outboard DAC. Since I am only 2-channel, I would prefer the option of being able to send the DSD signal DoP to that of the 4-channel downmix. For some reason, I mistakenly thought the choice was between DSD-PCM conversion, andby Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
Oh, man. I misunderstood that and chose the wrong one. Doh.by Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
The DoP version does not have DSD to pcm conversion capability like the downmix version has, correct?by Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
Thank you. Been experimenting and enjoying the sound. I haven't yet adjusted 6 & 7 for jitter reduction options, but it sure has sounded good so far with both in the off position.by Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
While on the subject of switches that affect filters and such, the description of the HD module on the website mentions data jitter reduction off/1-3, but I cannot seem to find how those selections are made. Is it through a combination of off/on with switches 6 and 7? Thanks again.by Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
Looking forward to the graphs and wondering if you can show a time-domain graph to show pre and post ringing. In the meantime, anyone care to post their experience with the available filters, which they prefer and why? If the DAC in question accepts up to 192khz, I assume there is no reason to send the signal at 88.2 rather than 176.4, in which case the filter choice is narrowed to simply oneby Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
Thank you, Pavel. I pulled the trigger on an HD board. Can't wait to instal and hear it!by Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
Thank you, Pavel. As I'm only interested in 2-channel audio at the time, perhaps looking for an existing original Vanity module would give me the best results? Maybe that's not an option, however, since I am looking to fit an oppo 103, which is not listed in the models the vanity fits. For 2 channel and DSD-PCM, are there advantages to the HD in terms of clocking/jitter and/or bufby Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
I was reading the descriptions for the Avarice and the discontinued Vanity module and was curious about this: "Oversampling‘s purpose is to dramatically simplify the design of the analogue post-DAC filter by performing the hard work in the digital domain instead of analogue domain. Not many people are aware that 8x oversampling filters are integrated within nearly every DAC in existence aby Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
Thank you, Pavel. So the output jitter from the vanity board then would be the same from a 93 as from a 103, yes?by Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
Hello. I am hoping someone can tell me if there is a difference in quality of the digital output between the 93 and the 103 using their respective VanityHD boards. Without the boards, the 103 registers lower jitter on the bench than the 93 through s/pdif and analog, but I'm not sure the higher jitter on the 93 is introduced before the vanity board takes the signal, and even then does the vby Mjay71 - Vanity103HD & Lite (discontinued)
